I bought a new Yamaha IDE 8X4X32. If i try and install the EZCD Creator 4.02 that came with it, it locks up in the middle of the install! So i went back to a older version I had 4.0 but now I get under buffer errors! I updated the patchs for the burner too. I even tried to use Nero, but NO luck. I've also tried 3 differant types of CD-R's. I use to have a Acer X2 that burned GREAT on this same PC with version 3.5 EZCD Creator. WTF is the deal here. Did I get a lemon? :|

What is the drive configuration on your machine and during what portion of the installation of the proper software is it crashing on?

Have you attempted to drop the burn speed to 2X or 4X?

Its a yamaha.. they make motorcycles and crap...

Seriously they do make decent CD-R drives.

But I would exchange it for the Plextor 8/4/32 which is under $160 now.

**Update**

Its a 8X4X24 IDE.

It now seems to burn off the H/D at 8X ok. Well it did on two H/D copies. But if I try to copy a CD to CD-R X8 I get Underbuffer Errors! I did try burning one at X2, but thats what I'm upgradeing from! :| It did however burn GOOD. At X8 it gets to 60%-90% then it gets underbuffer errors. Could it be my 50X Acer CD-Rom cant keep up at 8X speed? I also installed the Yamaha Burner in another computer that has a 40X Acer CD-Rom and still I get Underbuffer errors. But I could copy off the H/D on both computer and Burn ok at 8X. The only thing I can think is the matter is neither of the Acer CD-Roms can keep up at 8X speed with the yamaha burner, its that possable? If so i just cant believe it cant stay consistent at only 8X to stay up with the Yamaha Burner. I'm thinking about sending it back and getting a Plextor drive. But it would be a waste of time if its my Acer CD-Rom being the problem or two slow.

BTW...DMA is Unchecked its a IDE burner. Also i was finally able to get the software to installed fully after 5 attempts!

Running Win98
Primary:
Master - Maxtor 20GIG
Slave - W/D 8GIG

Secondary
Master - Acer 50X
Slave - Yamaha 8X4X24X IDE

Maybe switch my Yamaha to the secondary Master maybe? But it says in the book it should be fine set as the slave.

What would to do or try? :)
Thanks Guys!

It's your acer cdrom. Don't bother with CD to CD copies at high speeds unless you have a Plextor UW-SCSI cd-rom or something. Cheap IDE cdroms rip audio and data like crap.

Just always copy to HDD first.

kami,

Your kidding me right! :( Thats was the purpose of buying a new CD burner. If I cant burn a CD to CD at X8 that sucks! Does anyone know of a IDE CD-ROM that will work 100% at X8 burning speed?
This is depressing :| I really hate to copy everything to the H/D. But atleast were getting somewere now. how do you know this Kami? just curious? Commen sense? ;) Humm now what..

I'm not 100% sure but i'm almost positive my frined has a Acer CD-Rom and useing the same Yamaha burner as me. A matter of fact Im the one that told him about the Yamaha at Buycom. SO he bought one and his burns ok, or i havnt heard anything YET from him.

Thanks!

If you want to burn cd to cd, put your cd-rom on the primary ide controller with the hard-drive. I'm not 100% sure, but burning at 8X with the cd-rom and burner on the same controller is very hard... At least this way you'll know.

BTW, if you put the CDRW with the hard drive, burning from the HD may make coasters... Try it out and see. And come on, it doesn't take a long time to copy to the HD first, you're lazy. :)

HI,
BeHeMOTH I've been plaining to call you but just been very busy! We finished framing the basment this week at the house. I'll try and call you this week. I went ahead and sent the Yamaha back. I'm buying a Plextor with 4 MB of buffer that might help plus the help from other post here.

The buffer on the Yamaha was 4 Meg. What will you get from the Plextor:)
I have been doing CD's for 6 years and have only had Yamaha burners and have yet to see one not do what I don?t want it to! Spam all you like but just remember you spent $100 or more to get the same thing I did.

I will be honest with you, I have NO reason to lie. First the plextor is only going to cost me $30.00 more. 32X8X4X ;) Next We bought 2 of the same Yamaha burners that I just bought for work. I screwed up by not waiting for them to come in BEFORE I bought mine. Both of the ones we ordered for the two computers at work both crash in a blue screen of death with the software that came with the burner in installed. Both new Compaq computers EN series. I hate Compaqs myself. More then likely its just the software. But now we have to go out and buy new software for the burners which we shouldn't have to do. So now we have 2 people waiting on software. Me being the nice guy I'm told 2 other friends about this good deal on the Yamaha burner. One also cant get the EZCD software installed. The one person being BeHeMOTH posted here. So he then had to find other means of software for this burner, which he shouldnt have too. The other person I told about the same Yamaha burner is in the middle of returning her burner because it will not recognize the CD in the burner. She even called Yamaha and did some troubleshooting and determined it was defective. They told her to ship it back.

I have nothing agianst yamaha and more then likely its just my CD-ROM thats holding me back from burning at 8X. But I still want to check out the Plextor drive. Money is NO object when it comes to Computers/Hardware its a hobby for me! But lets be reasonable here. :D

Buck no hard feelings but I have seen so many misconfigured systems and the people blame the new burners and they have nothing to do with thier problems. I have installed a lot of Yamaha IDE buners and have yet to have a problem, but I do confess I do build the systems that I put them in.

Good luck with the Plextor I hope it works for you.

None taken :) I understand you 100%! I build computers outside of work. I have 4 computers here I built myslef networked together. One which has a CD-R that works fine but just slow. Ive only been in the IT field for 2 years and still have ALOT to learn. Its always nice to visit this board for GREAT help! Thats why I came here in the first place, because I havnt installed many CD Burners. As we both know installing a CDR/W shouldnt be that hard. Sometimes we all get stumped over something that should go smoothly.
It happens. Thanks for the nice reply!

Did you say that DMA is unchecked for the yamaha drive? Check it, and also check DMA for your other cdroms (if they can handle it). Your cdroms should be able to do 8x data burns without a problem....audio on the other hand, probably not. Not many cdroms can do 8x DAE.
