just built myself a computer and i formated using a single partition the NTFS file system or whatever (all booting from the xp cd). well i got to the point where it "looks like" windows and says "installing windows, 39 minutes remaining" and it brings up an error message saying that it cant read from the cd, some file didnt get copied, try cleaning the cd and all that crap. im quite sure its not the cd. the cd rom got that far so why wont it work now. it doesnt even seem to be readin the cd at this point in the install. i have a via p4pb 400 motherboard as well as a sony dvd and a lite-on burner. what should i do? thanks

Um... because it might not need that particular file before that point? Try the CD in both optical drives if you haven't already. You could try removing one drive, as suggested, but I doubt that would be an issue in itself. Maybe if you've got a bad IDE cable or something, though. Try the CD in another machine if possible before you start tearing this box apart.

Hi,

You might want to check that the media you are using is genuine. I have seen posts in other forums of people using the pirated enterprise (corporate) win xp pro cd and having similar problems.

If in doubt you can check at:

www.microsoft.com/piracy

Good luck,

Andrew

Hi,

If you can boot off of your CD, then all you need to do is that. When the system boots off the CD you'll be taken into the intial set up that will allow you to rearrange and format your partitions. That's about as "clean" as you'll get.

Good luck,

Andrew
