Can't get X to start on FreeBSD 4.8

Old PII computer with an ATI Rage Pro card.
I set everything up for the xfree config file, but everytime I do a 'startx' it says
no screens are found!!!!!!!

Why?!!?!? This is driving me nuts. I didn't have this problem with the same monitor on another
server. BTW ... I am trying to run openbox

its possible that X cant find any video modes that are supported by your vid card in the config file.

What does your "Device" and "Screen" sections look like?
Have a look-see in /etc/X11/XF86Config(might be XF86Config-4, differs).
