Hi,
I posted this under the Operating Systems forum, and got no response. Maybe this is the right forum?
Operating system: Windows XP Pro, SP2
Recently I tried using the system tool "System Information", and kept getting an error message. I did some homework and found out the Windows Management Instrumentation service must be running for this to work. But the WMI refuses to start. Or, more precisely, when I try to start it manually using the Services applet, it starts and then immediately stops. A generic error message pops up and says some services will only run if they are needed. But I think the WMI should be running all the time, shouldn't it? And if I need it to run System Information, why won't it start then? The Startup Type for it is Automatic, which I believe is what it should be.
I don't have any other symptoms, other than that my computer seems to take a lot longer than it should to boot up (don't know if this has anything to do with it). I've found various suggestions on the Web for getting the "System Information" applet to work, but all of them say "make sure the WMI service is running". And that's the problem...I can't get it to run.
Any suggestions? (Oh, and I have the WMI service checked to run in the msconfig utility under the Services tab, so that's not what's wrong either).
Thanks!
