cant get winxp pro to boot up

Fist id like to say thanks in advance and im not that technical when it comes to op.s
I have an amd 1.5 gig 40 gig hd with 256 megs of ram

What my problem is: I turned my computer on and the bios screen comes on then i get an error " Windows could not load because a file is missing or corrept" could not load windows\system32\config any ideas on what my options are, safe mode does not work as well? please help me if possible .

It does sound like your Operating System is hosed .

Have you tried selecting "boot from last known good configuration" ?

If that doesn't work, try booting on your WinXP CD and go through the start of the install process. It will take you to a screen that will give you a choice to hit R for Repair. This should repair your install (if its possible).
