Can't get windows to detect my iPOD

Does anyone have any idea why I can't get windows sp2 to detect my iPOD? I have installed all of the necessary software and I know my USB ports are good. Any advice?
 
Is windows not supposed to detect the device in like device manager? Or pop-up when plugged in and say windows has detected new hardware?
 
Not a MAC formatted ipod, just a Windows formatted one... Any chance that is the issue?

You also have to enable drive access for the iPod within iTunes in order for it to be treated like a hard drive.
