I have tried 2 separate Win98 CDs, one of which worked successfully before. No dice. Tried a different CD-ROM. No dice. It's a 3-gig HD and a vt82c597 chipset MoBo. It used to have Redhat on it but I didn't know the root password. I'm in the process of trying to install Gentoo via a LiveCD but not having any luck getting it to recognize the NICs.

This is just a play/spare machine, I might turn it into a firewall/router eventually if I can ever get it to work.

Test memory.
Test cables.

The root password is usually pretty easy to change. :p

I would write all zeros in the hope of cleaning out all the old stuff that fdisk and format miss.

It worked for me on 3 occassions...good luck

It's running great at 450...tried to install MBM but it says a device is disconnected...wanted to see if heat is whats bringin it down. ANy other temp monitoring software out there for a tyan s1590s?

If it's a K63 plain (?2.4v) consider runing at 400.

If it's a K63+ (2.2v) that should be no problem.

These chips would be hard for find a replacement for now.

For the K63+ there is a program to throttle the chip from 200 to 600 from windows on demand if you can find it. It uses the Power Now on the chip. It was at amdzone, but the files and forum areas were lost a few times.

I used sandra to indentify the monitor chip (it's been awhile) and MBM worked at the time. Just an older version I guess.

Found an active site http://www.k6plus.com/ that has k6 speed, the Power now program.
