Can't get Win 98 sound to work

I just did a big hardware change for a customer who only needs a basic system. I went from and old, old Intel Pentium MB to a bit newer Via Athlon MB. I kept the windows 98 SE installation on the hard drive, deleted the hardware and rebuilt the hardware in the registry. Everything went good except for audio. I tried onboard audio, SB, and ESS and although windows recognizes and installs drivers for each, the Multimedia control offers no preferred devices option, it is grayed out. The hardware devices showed all 3 as being installed correctly. I have tried to remove every reference in the registry to the old devices but am still stumped. The original was a CMI audio chip. I can reinstall windows and I am sure that would fix it but would prefer not to since that would mean reinstalling all the software as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did you uninstall the mobo chipset drivers before pulling the drive? And then install the new mobo chipset drivers after dropping the drive? That's usually the first suspect...
