I'm working on someone's Windows Vista 32bit PC and installed a WiBee USB wireless adapter (Realtek chipset, I think RTL8187) that they already had. Vista didn't seem to have drivers for the adapter, so wouldn't connect, though I didn't try to manually have Windows install them. Probably should have. So I used the CD that came with it and installed drivers to get it working. Then Windows Update installed newer ones for it.
However, even after selecting to remember and auto connect to their network, it won't. I think because the adapter drivers has it's own connector app (RtWLan.exe) that is maybe keeping it from doing so. However RtAWLan will auto connect to the network. But the Windows firewall blocks that app from auto running on startup, even if I add it to the firewall's exceptions list, so I have to run it manually.
So, I created a task in Task Scheduler to auto start the app, which does work. But it only works for the admin account. I need it to work in the Standard User account too. I have tried creating the task with the admin account, but selecting the Standard account, and I've tried creating it with the Standard account but it's not allowed. I've also tried changing the Standard account type to admin, creating it in that account (and the task works), then changing it back to Standard, but the task then doesn't work.
My next step when I go back over there is to try removing the Realtek drivers. Should there be a generic Realtek Windows driver that will work? Or should I just tell them to invest in a PCI wireless card (which should also be more modern)?
