Can't get widescreen resolutions in XP on Intel 855GM

I just picked up a new 22" LCD (Acer) that supports widescreen 1680 x 1050 as its native resolution. So I hook it up to my Acer notebook using an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 855GM chipset, and it doesn't support that resolution in Windows XP Home. Latest drivers are installed. Nor can I manage to install the monitor driver, assuming that would even help.

Also the colors look like crap, but I think it's just under windows, though I cannot confirm that (right now).

Is there any way of getting widescreen resolutions in Windows XP?

Ignore the colors looking like crap. That is my piece of junk laptop port that for some reason requires that the cable be pulled on in an upwards manner so that a proper connection is made.

I doubt it's WindowsXP. More likely that your integrated graphics does not support 1680x1050. Whats the highest resolution it goes up to?

I'm running the monitor in 1600x1200 right now. The chipset actually supports up to 2048x1536. I think its the integrated video bios that does not support the resolution, and there hasn't been a bios update for the notebook since 2004. But there must be some workaround to force the drivers to display resolutions that aren't supported by the bios.
