I have a Toshiba laptop (SM30X-118) and suddenly a few days ago, my hard disk became very slow. Windows takes about 3 minutes to load, when i listen to a song with any media player and i open a program it takes too long. Searching at device manager i found out that at the IDE Atapi Controllers TAB, under the primary IDE Channel where
the hard disk is connected, the current transfer mode is PIO Mode although i select DMA if available in the transfer mode. I have installed the latest intel chipset software installation utility and the current transfer mode is still PIO mode. The chipset is intel 82855 and i have Windows XP with SP2

Try removing the IDE controller from Device Manager, reboot, and let Windows reinstall the hardware.

Uninstalling primary IDE channel, secondary IDE channel, Intel utra ATA 82801 ultra ata storage controller and finally restarting solved my problem. Now it is set back Ultra DMA Mode 5. Thank you all for your quick replies. :)
