Can't get this system to go past the memory/hd/cd detection screen. Please help.

Hello, I just put together a machine from spare parts I had around the house and am having a problem getting past the hardware detection screen. It detects all my hardware such as the correct hard drive/cdrom drive/keyboard/memory but will go no further. I have tried resetting the cmos, tried using a emergency boot disc and all sorts of jumper settings all to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions or any idea what the hell could be causing this because I am stumped. Thanks for your help.

Motherboard brand..? What's on the hard drive..? Does the floppy and/or hard drive light come on..?

Did you disable "Stop on all errors" in the BIOS???

try setting PnP OS to no & enable reset configuration in bios!

just a thought but is there an OS installed on the hdd?
