O.K., on startup the menu to choose to boot into windows normal, safe mode, command prompt only, etc. always comes up! It's set at default to normal, but nothing is wrong with the system (that I know of). Nothing flagged in device manager, but when i first get to the desktop, as it's loading all of the programs, there's a button on the task bar (like when a proggy is minimized) labeled "memory driver failure". Once boot up is complete, everything functions fine! Is this "memory driver failure" telling me something, or do I just need to change a key in the registry to stop this menu? Please help!

Have you got TweakUI installed, there is an option in TweakUI that allows you to set the boot options. If the option to show start-up menu is ticked then un-tick it.If you don't have TweakUI installed then I would insall it and then untick the box. There may be a setting in win ini or the registry but I don't know what that might be.Go with TweakUI because it's very usefull.
PS. you can find it on your Win98 disk( not Se) or better still download the latest version from Microsoft.

Check your msdos.sys (hidden system file) for the line:
BootMenu=
The value should be 0 if you want to hide the boot menu, 1 if you want the boot menu to show at every boot.

This might work.

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.

2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

3. Click Advanced, and then unclick to deselect the Enable Startup Menu check box.

4. Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.

5. Select the Safe Mode menu option from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.

::This might just make the change to MSDOS.SYS for you so try this if Ladi's fix doesn't work::

It's much easier to click Start | Run | Type: Msconfig | hit enter.. then proceed from step 3 :D But both TweakUI and MSconfig both just set the boolean in msdos.sys like Ladi mentioned.
