In this thread I explain how I piped the air from my floor AC vent up to the front of my PC.
Well, like I said temps dropped (actually dropped from 38c idle to 31c idle ultimately.)
So at 2.6 I've been having troubles with Core 0 passing Prime 95. It would only run for about 5-8 minutes before failing but Core 1 would chug along happily.
Well I can't run my ac all the time unfortunately, but it was running for awhile and my CPU was at 31c, so I gave it a run once again, well this time temps didnt get past 48c 2 prime (about 54-55c before) and Core 0 passed for a good 43 minutes or so before I stopped the test.
Now, even before its been stable in everything else, including hours of battlefield 2 in a hot room, so from my POV prime stable is more a peace of mind than a necessity. If I'm stable in all areas I use my PC I'm not going to drop my OC just to pass prime. (Dont do any DC projects.)
However, passing prime is definitely preferable so I'm going to buy a room AC unit and try to accomplish the same thing. It should be possible since the unit will be causing condensation around it, but it will be sitting far enough away from the PC to be safe.
Anyway, point is, as long as temps are kept cooler, in this case merely 6 degrees on average, Core 0 is a happy customer. (At same volts it was failing prime earlier.)
So if you arent getting the oc you want, try lowering the temps if you can, especially with winter on the way. An obvious point, but I cannot tell you all how encouraging it was to be frustrated with a 5-10min prime and see it run finally for so long. And it was only a (max, maybe less than) 6 degrees difference!
