can't get surroud system to work on new Smart TV

Hello forum this is my first post.

I just got a LG 47LM6400 and I can't get my surround system to work on it. How do I get it to work?

My setup is a Polk audio 5.1 speaker system hooked up to a Pioneer vsx-D812. I have it plugged into the DVD/LD then into the composite female adapter that came with the TV. I also just bought a Digital optical audio cable to see if that worked but nothing is working. I'm not even getting sound coming out of the speakers at all. Also my blu-ray player is also a LG and the receiver is pretty old so no HDMI.

Thanks

Have you tried telling the TV to output sound on the optical port (you said you used an optical cable to test)

I've not used a Pioneer AVR, but on my Onkyo I did have to change the settings on each input and select which optical and analog plugs were associated with each input. For example, for DVD/BluRay, on the on screen menu setup, I selected Optical 1 and Audio 2 (as labeled on the back of the receiver).

You shouldn't be plugging anything into the TV other than a video connection. Never try and use an audio output on a TV to source audio to a speaker system from.

Sounds like you'd need to run component from the BD player to the TV directly and then run an optical or digital coax to the receiver for the sound.
