Hello,

What would be the proper steps to figure out how to get my sound card working?

In Debian, I was able to get it.. in CentOS 7.1 I wasn't...

It detects in /prod and I can see it... but no sound plays. I'm having a hard time finding info... it's a Dell Optiplex 755.

Does your computer have a video card with an HDMI port by any chance? Sometimes you need to change the sound source it's outputting to the correct source.

I haven't used CentOS 7, but CentOS 5 used alsa utilities like alsachooser and alsaunmute to do that.

Another thing you can try is to compile your own pristine kernel from kernel.org. I once had an issue where Debian's kernel didn't recognize one of my USB ports but the pristine kernel did.

Another Option is to dump Centos and keep Debian if it works.I was like that some time ago ,i liked to test as many Distros as i could but i learned that of all Distros i tried,Mint,Centos,Lubuntu,Debian, and much more, but all i had was headaches, that's why i settled on Ubuntu since 5 years ago and have been with it ever since without having an issue.
