I'm trying to get a 9 pin serial mouse to work in win 98 on a pent mmx AT board. the ribbon cables have a plug with a 9 hole plug and I have another ribbon cable (serial) with 10 holes. The com 1 port has only 9 pins (looks like 1 is broken but the com 2 port on the board has 10 pins. Can I use these ports to set up the serial mouse with?? They are next to the parallel port plugin cable. I have tried adding the mouse through "add new hardware wizard" in windows This mouse works on another machine and it was working on this machine till lately. Does the serial mouse need a driver that is not contained in Win 98. Should I use the ribbon cable with 10 holes in the plugs??
any help appreciated Mark

plug the mouse into the 9 pin com1 port and make sure that the serial ports are enabled in the bios. you should be good to go.

You could put the ribbon cable on com2 and make sure com2 is enabled in the bios.
This might fix it if the pin is actually broken off.
If you are trying a different cable on the com port, there were 2 different wiring configurations for
9 pin serial cables.
