Can't get scanner part of AIO printer to work in Ubuntu

So I have a HP officejet all in one model 600 printer hooked up via parallel port. I have gotten the printer and fax to work via the HpLip driver. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 the problem is I just cannot get the system to recognize the scanner part of the device. Xsane keeps saying it can't detect anything. I have tried a win2k virtualbox system but vbox does not recognize parallel at all and vmware sees parallel ports but does not recognize a device attached. Any suggestions on what I can try to get xsane to see the device or should i just give up?
