Can't get proper resolution from Radeon HD 7770

I just helped my uncle set up a new Dell XPS 8500 desktop, which has a Radeon HD 7770 video card. His monitor is a HP f2105 which has native resolution 1680x1050. The monitor had a VGA connector and the video card DVI, so I used the included adapter.

Right away I noticed that the resolution was off, but when I went to set it to the native res, 1680x1050 is not in the list. The highest is 1600x1200, then 1600X900, 1440x900, 1366x768, etc. So I updated the video driver to the latest Catalyst, but still no change, 1680x1050 still not available in list.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

First and foremost I'd suggest to make sure that you use a proper driver for your monitor and not some generic plug and play stuff.

If such a driver does not exist, you can make one yourself by querying the monitor yourself, using Monitor Asset Manager

It wouldn't hurt to try a direct DVI connection either.

So this is an older monitor without a DVI or HDMI input? If so, VGA is your only option, but it's not optimal for quality. I've never seen it cause this problem though.

Where did you try to change resolution? In the Windows control panel or AMD Catalyst? I'd look around in Catalyst to see if there's a way to "unlock" the full resolution. If you don't find anything, I can poke around in my system to try and find the appropriate setting.

I recall having this problem once or twice on various systems, and it usually required setting a maximum available resolution, but I don't recall where I found that setting.

Yes, it's an older monitor, but highly rated in its time, and still works well for my uncle. It does have a DVI connection, so I'll ask him to try a DVI cable. It does show up in Windows as a generic plug and play monitor. I've looked for a monitor driver without any luck, but I'll try that utility to create one.

You should definitely use DVI if it's available. The picture will be much better, and it might auto detect the resolution without you having to do anything else.
