cant get port forwarding to work..

Hi. I have a broadband internet connection at home and it runs through my router. I am trying to run some internet services through my computer but i cant seem to get them working. The problem is if i type in my routers static ip address, it doesnt seem that they are being sent to my computer.

For instance.. I am using a program called WWW File Share which basically creates a webpage with links to documents on your computer that you can download. I can get this program working locally and even can get it working by typing in the static ip into my computer but i cant get it working when i go to a different network and try and access (e.g. at my girlfriends house).

Port Forwarding is set up through my router, and i have had this problem with my past 2 routers. What is it i am doing wrong? I can't ping my address when I am outside of my network.

Also.. how come some websites that are meant to tell me my ip address tell me differently? (e.g. http://www.wfshome.com/myip.php)?

This site is telling me my IP is 202.7.17x.xxx where as other sites (and my router, and the details my isp gave me) tell me my ip address is 230.245.13x.xxx

My router is a LinkSys WRV54G.

Many thanks

OK, I'm having a hard time interpreting some of your original post.

Are you saying that if you make a request from the Internet, and the request uses your external IP address, rather than your DNS name, then everything works?

Most routers won't respond to a ping from the outside unless you turn on that function in the router settings.

Also, be sure you've either turn off WAN management of your router, or else make sure that the router's external web management page is running on a Port that you aren't using for something else (use TCP Port 8080, for instance, for your router's external management web site).

Nah nothing to do with DNS dont even have that setup...

its ok though i got it working.

thanks for the help anyways guys !

Whenever you forward a port through ther router, remember you also have to go into your DSL modem's firewall and forward it there too. So you have forward it 2 places.

Also, at least for me (may be different for you), you have to "permit" or "authorize" or "trust" the application which you're forwarding the port for in the software firewall, such as Kaspersky or whatever other software firewall you use on the computer. So 3 places.

At least for me, forwarding a port through the router only doesn't work. That's not enough. You have to also forward it / authorize it in the DSL modem's firewall and the sw firewall on your box.

JackMDS told us of a good and very little free tool to tell you your external WAN and your internal LAN IP addresses, which you might install, works great: IP2

As scott posted above you have to make sure that all Devices and applications that block ports are letting port 80 through.

WWW File Share listens on port 80 so using any other port is not relevant unless you change the application's setting.

Many ISPs do block port 80. Many applications can set to listen to a port of you choice (I do not know about WWW File Share read the manual).

The computer that you install the WWW File Share should have a static IP otherwise the port opening would not be valid if the computers;s IP changes.

Instead of using an IP that changes on a Dynamic service, subscribe to a free DNS service and get to your network via

subdomain. http://www.ezlan.net/myip.html
