can't get past blue MS windows screen

I have an HP pavilion xt118 and with winxp home sp1. randomly this morning when i booted it, the OS would just stay at the blue MS windows screen. the one right before the login screen. It doesn't appear to be locked because I can move the cursor. I've tried booting in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and last known working config and they all do the same thing. any help would be appreciated. This is really pissing me off. it worked perfectly fine the night before.
