well.. as the title suggests.. [whoops.. accidently posted]

okay.. after 2hrs of tech support no go.. they said call MS to see wasup.. the following is the story:

got my cable modem service setup yesterday and it DOES work on my laptop. BUT the laptop has to go after this weekend since its my bros. So I call ATT and register my MAC address of my nic since my desktop is always there. To keep this short I wont go into details. I had to call back and this was my 2hr session. Registered my MAC on the USB and it doesnt work either. Heres the problem. They were able to refresh my IP from that side; some how cycling my modem from their side. So it does work but I cant get online???? I'm not sure what is going on since it is able to pick up the ip/dns info from ATT via the modem BUT I cant get out of my house through this thinig on my computER! since yesterday and all of today i've been trying to solve this problem. AND i've reinstalled XP on my desktop...

WHAT DOES WORK:
I'm pretty sure all the nics work; my home network works and its able to transfer files and everyone can see everyone. After talking to a friend I pinged 127.0.0.1 (not sure why) but it was okay also.

Hardware:
intel 8255x nic (desktop)
linksys switch 10/100
motorola surfboard cable modem sb4100
generic pcmcia nic
everything is runnin XP pro

If I left anything out please let me knoow.. please if you've got any ideas... i'm gonna go and pick up two nics and a router tomorrow and see if they will sovle the problem... this is really upsetting me..

Some random thoughts from a novice cable modem user:

Why do you need to tell the cable company the mac address of your nic? You need only supply the mac address of the cable modem

The sb4100 also has usb connectivity. Have you tried that?

ATT required the MAC of the modem and nic.. they limit you to 1 IP and i already tried usb since i said i registered my mac for it... it is really crappy since my buddies that use time warner dont need MACs of their nics so they can run as many comps/ip they want through their cable modems..

Again, probably a newbie question but:

Don't people have networks that are hooked up to cable modems, using only 1 IP addy? The whole process should be invisible to the cable modem or cable modem provider.

well.. my problem isnt sharing the internet.. my problem is that i want the cable modem on the desktop only and it isnt working on there. which is why i can only use my laptop. I dont need to share this connection I need to get this up and running first off...

I think i know how to share this connection if i can get it up and running on my computer.

OK Another thing to try is did you reset the modem with the reset button? My cable operates on the mac address of the nic as I am sure yours does. I think that your isp does not have the right mac address in there system. The ping that you did 127.0.0.1 pings the modem which is the default gateway. your mac address should have 12 numbers.

Do you mind if we slow down a second? First off, how are things wired? Did you go directly from the laptop to the cable modem? Are you trying to go from the Computer to the Cable Modem. Or do you have a HUB in the mix somewhere? If you have a HUB, is one of your other computers grabbing the IP address from AT&T?

I would first disconnect your network and make sure that this computer can talk to the Cable Modem correctly, and that it can see the network.

Pinging 127.0.0.1 is done to make sure that the TCP/IP stack is working correctly. Every tcp/ip stack recognizes 127.0.0.1 as localhost.
Since that works, then you should be able to do either an IPCONFIG (If Winnt/WinXP), or a winipcfg (If Win9x/ME), and see if you have an external IP address.
If you have an external address, then you should be able to do a ping of that address.

Isolating your computer & Modem will also help determine if maybe you have a twisted/straight through cable problem.

okay.. i took my nic and modem over to my cousins house to see if it would work and wouldnt you know it.. plug right in and no problems...

came home and plugged it into my computer again! and it just came right up...

sooo.. i'm confused as hell since i've taken it out a few times figuring i'd reset it.. but maybe it was just something goofy..

I think it was ATT fault, i had their rented cable modem and when i bought one from BB i had to register that one in their system, it took seriously 9 calls for them to get it right. I finally had a senior tech get on and they had to whipe out all the info about the previous mac addresses and they re-enter the new one. it sucked calling so many times.
