can't get onboard sound working

just got a new ms-815et-pro mobo and can't get the sound working. running win98se and have all the appropriate drivers downloaded. system specs say everything is fine. no speaker icon either. any ideas? thanks

You did check onboard sound is enabled in bios?

yes. either auto or disabled. it is on auto.
