Can't get Norton or Win98 utils to defrag HD, Help!

Hi all,

I've been trying to get my HD defragmented, but for some reason it keeps starting over due to "disk write" or "disk contents have changed" and the program has to start all over again. I have tried shutting down everything except "Explorer" with Ctrl+Alt+Del or shutting them down manually, and I have also disconnected the LAN. I am running Win98SE on an Athlon XP1600 with Maxtor 60GB HD and Epox mobo. There is no RAID or anything else unusual about the setup at all. I just cannot get the damn HD to defrag. Anyone have any suggestions?
 
start in "Safe Mode" and run the defrag from there. using the windoes one. or DL "Diskeeper" and use it. its free for a lil bit and will defrag your HD fast
