I am trying to set up a home network. None of the computers are connected to the internet.

Problem is, after I get everything setup, the network seem to work VERY intermitently. I will ping the other computer and ONCE IN A WHILE I will get a response, but most of the time the ping times out. The computers do show themselves in network neighborhood.

I am using a D-Link DSS-5+ 5 Port Switch between 2 Win98 computers.

I install TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks.
I then set up my unique IP numbers with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

What is the problems here. I have never personally setup a network from scratch before so it is probably something very simple.....

Disable any Firewall, or and Virus scanner.

Install NetBEUI (at least for diagnosis purposes), make it Default Protocol, and try.

If it works OK using NetBEUI then your TCP/IP setting scheme is not correct.

If does not work under NetBEUI, you probably have hardware problem.

No virus firewall software installed.

Will try to NetBUI when I get a chance.

The thing that really bugs me is that sometimes ping works, but mostly it does not. Sort of like a loose connection.

Well, I tested the D-Link Switch at wrok by simply patching it between my workstation and the wall outlet. I could access the network fine this way. Thus, the switch appears to be working properly....

I have not tried it again at my friends house....

Any more suggestions???

I have a similar problem, so I suppose I'll throw it into this thread.

DLINK DI704 ,, (2) computers [XP & 98se]

I'm fairly new at networking and basically am clueless. I've done one before but it just set itself up, of course they were both winXP units. What I'm trying to do is share a cable connection I just got installed with two or more computers hooked up into the router above. I've tried manually configuring the IP's and gateway's to the necessary numbers and automatically letting windows detect it. Both have failed me.

Is there something that I'm doing wrong. It does seem like there are a bunch of other things that could be affecting this, but what I'm asking is what I've probably didn't know or overlooked - a setting or something. Don't have a virus scanner so that's not the problem and I have firewall disabled on the XP unit.

IP's I've tried 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 -- subnet mask 255.255.255.0 -- gateway 192.168.0.1

Help PLEASE!

Oh yeah, how do you find out what your IP is with 98 and XP? I remember with 98 it was something like running ipconfig?

Anyway, teach me!
