Hi, I am having problems getting my network to work on my computer. Im running a newly installed Windows XP on a Abit BE-6II board with a 3com EtherlinkXL NIC. XP finds the NIC fine, and all the lights are green when I plug in, but still no network.
Heres what I've tried...
-Tried all PCI slots (NIC is currently residing in 2nd PCI slot, not sharing an IRQ with anything else)
-Installed the NIC in another XP Computer, works fine.
-configured XP networking exactly like the working XP computer
-Tried two other NICs in the ABit, all have the same problem.
-Tried installing another PCI device (sound card) and it works fine.

Please anyone have any suggestions? I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out.
TIA.

I have had the same problem... I discovered it was ZoneAlarm not letting me connect to other computers or let them connect to me. I use it because I set myself as the DMZ host on my router, but still want some protection.

If you have ZoneAlarm installed add the other computers IP to the trusted zone. If your behind a firewall (I.E. a router) add the entire IP range for the router into ZoneAlarm's trusted zone. This works best if the router is set up for static IPs instead of DHCP. Although it will work either way, with DHCP you may want to tell the router to only give out as many IPs that there are computers on your network.

Bad cable? IRQ conflict? I remember well the horrors of trying to get just the right IRQ setup with the right slots in the Be6-II. If I am not incorrect not all of its slots were Buss Mastering slots and they hated to share.

Edit I see you tried all slots so that is definitely perplexing. Maybe the cable is the problem..

If you have just two computers that you are networking, without a hub, then you need a crossover cable. One end is terminated as 568A and the other end as 568B. If you are using a hub then you want straight cables from each PC to the hub.

I have a cable connection that is split by a router. Im just trying to get my stupid 2nd computer to access the network/internet. The actual ethernet cable isnt the problem either because my other computer works fine with it. Right now Im installing windows 2k pro to see if that will do anything...:(

I'm not much on networking, but you might want to double check your router settings and make sure they are correct.
