i installed fireworks... and now all my gif/jpg files are macromedia files so all their icon's changed...it defaults to opening in fireworks... which I did not intend to have happen...I switched the default back to explorer to open the file types... but I can't get the original icons back...all the icons for my images look like html files....I've messed around in file types under the control panel/systems... but unless I default to an application other than explorer... it won't allow me to select an icon...

running win2k...

how would i fix this?

Do a search for powertoys on microsoft.com and download tweakui. It has an option to recover default icons when something messes them up.

in xp open up my computer, on the top menu goto tools >> folder options, under the file types tab select the file type (extension) that you have wrong icon on, click advanced, in this area it will have a button "change icon" with a list of icons that apply for that extension, if its not in the list for some strange reason (dont know why it wouldnt) you can click the browse button and manually locate the icon.

Edit: Oh sorry didnt read all of what you said, since you said you already did this, did you try to manually browse for the icon ?
