Can't get my lappy to obtain and IP on internal network

Well I am trying to get Office 97 setup files from my main box to my lappy and am having a heck of a time. I am using an 8 port hub to try and do this. I have NICs in both comps and have the C drive shared on each of them. However, I cannot get them to see each other. I have tried crossing them over and with them set to equal but still nothing. Please help me out here guys. The laptop has Win95 B on it and the Duron has WinME on it if that can help. When I run "winipcfg" without the quotes, I receive back 0.0.0.0 for both the IP and Subnet. I have the drivers installed, TCP/IP, Client For Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing. Please help me out. Thanks in advance 🙁

whenever you network, the first thing you should always do is see if you can ping each computer.

try pinging back and forth. if you get replies, then you know you've networked them successfully. if not, then you know you have a problem

let us know what your results are

Ummm, how about the ping? It sounds like you are using patch cables to the hub and also tried a crossover cable tethered together. Did the ping work?

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you are not running DHCP. DHCP is the application in charge of handing out addresses. So checking the obtain IP address auto-magicily will not play a happy tune. 🙂

Set one pc to 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 and the other to 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0
and fire up that expencive machine that goes ............ PING!

Sorry, friday afternoon siliness. 🙂

Give it a try and I'll check back in an hour or so that it takes to comute home.

Well, that actually WILL work on a machine running Win98 or newer. Setting "Obtain automatically" on such machines that do not find a DHCP server will cause each machine to set its own "dynamic" address, so those machines should show an address in WINIPCFG. However, Win95 machines will not perform this function, so the best answer to his situation is what you said next:

<<Set one pc to 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 and the other to 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0>>

learn something new every day. 🙂

Thanks TallGeese.
