Can't get my HP Laserjet p2055dn to print in auto-duplex!!!

With the semester winding down, I thought I'd finally sit down and try and figure out what's going on with my printer. I print 75-100 pages per week for my classes and the auto duplex is important! The auto duplex feature worked great when I was running Vista Ultimate. Now that I've been running 7 Pro for 2 months (MSDNAA), I still can't figure out how to make this thing auto duplex! I've combed through all the settings and have tried everything but it just won't duplex unless I select manual duplexing which makes me go all the way out to the living room half way through the job and move the pages into the autofeeder. I let my roomie print to it so that's why it's in the living room. I even tried running the driver installer for Vista under compatibility but that didn't work either (The drivers for the printer are built into 7).

Does anybody know what to do? I was going to go through support with HP to try and get somebody on the phone but I can't for the life of me get a phone number out of that website! The funny thing is, the drivers for this printer are built into OS X Snow Leapord and work perfectly. Most of the time I send files to my server and then get on my MBP to print the document auto duplex...

Drivers that are included with the operating system often do not have the extended features that the downloadable driver provides.

I forgot to mention in my OP that I'm running the x64 version of 7 Pro. Would the XP drivers in compatibility mode still work you think??

Thanks for your reply!

I'm aware of that but there's no other drivers listed on the HP website. It just says they are included. How can they include drivers that don't do the one thing I bought the printer to do? Plus, the included drivers in 10.6 work just fine with auto duplexing.

There's got to be something I'm missing...

I've had the same problem. The tech at HP said they are working on a driver for Win 7. That was a month ago. As of today 01/16/10 no new driver. This has been a bad experience as I purchased this printer because of the duplex capability. I haven't figured out how to "fool" the printer to duplex and HP support is no help.

Thanks a bunch for posting this, even if there's no fix yet! At least I know I'm not alone. I'm really disappointed as well. I've had HP LaserJets for about 5 years now and love them. Auto duplexing worked beautifully with Vista and now I have to go out and do the manual duplexing. My printer isn't that far away but I'd really like to get that functionality back because I print tons of PDFs as a history major working on my final paper.

Again, thanks for posting - let's hope this gets resolved soon! I'll try calling if I get some free time and see if I can add some fuel to their fire. That reminds me, how in the world do you get a hold of them? I couldn't find a number on their site for the life of me!

This should help. Toll free numbers for various customers. If your printer's out of warranty, they may charge to talk to you without cost, but they'll probably provide free help through their online live chat... At least they always have for me. :)

I just bought this printer in August so I'm assuming it's still in warranty. Thanks for digging that up!!

For contact numbers to HP go here:

Having a problem. My boss bought a HP Laserjet P2055dn. Loaded the software, connected when it told me to, but I can't get the computer to communicate with the printer. Running Vista Business. When this didn't work took printer to my computer running XP loaded a generic driver and printed fine (didn't try to load software just wanted to make sure it would print). Tried again tonight and no luck. tried running a firmware update but apparently it's not communicating with the printer either. anybody have any ideas?

It's been some time since I did the firmware upgrade on mine but I remember doing it through Ethernet. Try that and see how that goes.

Thank you for the quick response BTW. I downloaded the latest firmware upgrade from HP. Showed progress and the smiley face your supposed to get but when I printed the config page it is showing the old firmware date code. Wondering if maybe I should try the install on my XP system and see what happens.

If you need it, drivers for various OS's.

Thanks but I've already been down that road. Sorry, should have mentioned that prior to jumping in the forums I had installed and uninstalled from the CD; downloaded from website and did an install from the download; uninstalled that and tried again from the CD. Gave it a rest for a day and tried again from the CD, then attempted the latest firmware update to no avail. This is frustrating. About to tell boss to take the friggin thing back.

No problem. Glad to help if I can.

I'd still try plugging the printer into a router/switch and seeing if the firmware will update. I can't be sure but I seem to remember having to do it over Ethernet.

It just boggles the mind that such a simple feature works perfectly in Vista but not in 7. Go figure...
