Can't get Itunes to recognize my new iphone 3G

ATT sent me home cuz the in store activation was taking too long and i plug in my phone only to have nothing show up on itunes. I tried restarting to no avail. My 1st gen iphone is still recognized just fine. Am I missing a step here? it's 7.7.
 
fwiw, I think i isolated the problem to the included usb cable. . . . I plugged my new iphone into my old iphone usb cable and its working fine now. I even tried to charge my old phone with the new usb cable and its not working. on the phone right now with their reps to see if I can get it replaced.
