Last week windows started giving me the error that the SOFTWARE hive file was corrupted, so I reformatted my main partition and reinstalled windows.
The setup was very problematic and crashed 3 times before I even managed to get into windows. After I got it, IE started crashing and the compuer would go into chdsk between reboots. After upgrading to IE5.5, the computer finally stoped crashing.
It ran ok for about 5 days, but yesterday it showed me the same error message as before reformatting (corrupted, absent or undreadable SOFTWARE hive).
Right now, it manages to get past this point sometimes, but even if it does, it quickly shows the windows blue background (before login box appears) and the "windows logon process" crashes.
I looked at some previous posts and it seems the problem might be ACPI, but I doubt it.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I dont even know if its a hardware or a software problem.
BTW, I am posting this from linux, which seems to be working ok.
