Can't get Internet from Wireless connection

Setup a network last night, using a Netgear MR814 Cable/DSL Wireless Router. I'm wanting to connect to the Internet on a Wireless laptop (Dell Latitude C260/Integrated Wireless). I was able to access the network easily with the laptop, but couldn't get the Internet. Any advice on other setup I need to do to pull this off?

Do you have WEP encryption enabled or not? Did you setup the correct SSID from the router/access point and your laptop's wireless nic?

I did set up the WEP and all the correct SSID. I didn't try restarting the router, but I'll try it when I get home. Thanks.

After connecting to the network run a ipconfig and check to make sure your router is listed as the gateway.

If you're able to access the other computers in the local LAN, you obviously have no connectivity issues, you have a DNS or router configuration issue. My SMC router allows me to restrict the wireless from accessing the Internet, are you sure you're not configured that way? Also, you may want to open a command prompt and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Do this on the wireless machine and one of the wired ones. Compare the IP addresses, only the computer's IP address should be different, the gateway, DNS servers, and DHCP server should all point to the router.

OK, everything's the same except the Windows IP configuration. I'm not sure if I should change those, because this is a work computer.

Is there another way to do this?

Try disabling WEP. On my SMC router at home, I can't get on the web when WEP is turned on. However, turning it off allows me to get on the web. Maybe it's something that I'm doing wrong...I just left WEP off for now. :eek: Hope this helps.

^I did the same thing this morning and my connection worked. I was then able to narrow down what was wrong. Turns out my WEPkey was wrong. Damn thing is too long and with such random numbers/letters.

Did you check this? Sounds like your ipconfig stuff is right, and seeing how you can access network from the wireless, maybe you're simply being denied access to the internet.

I'm really reticent to turn off WEP. I may give it a shot for a bit to see if that's where the disconnect is coming.

As far was the restriction of wireless from the Internet, where would that be? Do I just need to dig around in the configuration section?

I'm not the best at networking, but I'll try and help as much I can...

I turned mine off and went down to get a bagel. Came back up and things were ok, so I turned the WEP back on again.

I don't think anythings wrong with your wep though. I downloaded your router's manual HERE.. On page 60 of 122, or section 6-4, there's a section on Block Services. Check to see if you're blocking any services.

Yeah, I just talked to a wireless guru here at work and he said to check and make sure all the DNS is correct, which I did. I'm pretty sure that's what I tried last night.

He also suggested that I make sure it's not allowing only one IP address to be on the router and that it allows a range of IP addresses. I'll try that next. Does that sound reasonable?

Are you running static IP, or DHCP? I've found that many wireless routers...for whatever reason...have troubles passing on DNS settings.

Have you tried statically assigning your DNS settings into the TCP/IP properties of your wireless network adaptor in your laptop? If not, I'd give that a shot.

Well, after spending some quality time with Jaspirt from Netgear tech support, it's working. After running through all the normal issues, it ends up being the proxy server settings. We use a proxy server at work and that was still checked, so I unchecked it in Internet connections and bingo, live and in charge.

So thanks for all the suggestions. It really helped narrow things down. Now to reactivate WEP.
