I downloaded the newest Win98 drivers and I install them but when I run the scanning program it says "Sorry, scanner can not be initialized. Scanner can't be found". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and looked at HP's support but I couldn't find any solutions.

I think it has something to do with how it's installed with USB. Do I have it plugged in while I install or do I install software, restart, then plug it in?

Oh yeah, nothing shows up in Device Manager, not even it with an exclamation by it.

Btw, I'm not stupid and can install other stuff but for the life of me can't get this thing working. The scanner works too I've used it before.

don't know for sure with that scanner but I would install the software first then connect the scanner. if it's not detected then use the "add new hardware" in control panel for installing it!

i have a hp scanjet 5200c and got so tired of how much of a pain it is to setup in win2000 that i bought another scanner. hp's tech support software and drivers are at the top of my list of things to avoid.

I've had soo many problems with my HP 6200c scanner on my CUSL2 board I have given up, it works fine on my laptop but refuses to work on my desktop. HP tech support is worthless, they wanted to know if it was plugged-in :(

Hmm that doesn't sound too good; others are having problems.

I don't feel like it tonight :)\) but I'll try those suggestions tomorrow. Thanks.

I could try it on my other computer but no usb on that one. Ugh, just the thought of doing a 50+mb scan without usb.

bacillus is on the right track. Do not physically connect the scanner to the PC. Install the software for the scanner, then w/ the computer running, plug in the scanner. Yes, this is specific to USB. Typically you don't plug anything into a computer when it's running; USB is the exception (I think FireWire is similar, but there aren't many FW devices today). When you plug the scanner in it should be recognized by Win98 and the scanner software.

Well I installed everything and got rid of any traces of it then installed the newest drivers and software from HP's site. It didn't ask me to restart so I just plugged it in when it was finished. Then it said "found new hardware... installing software" Finishes that, and I expected it to restart so it would be added under 'Imaging Device' in device manager. Still wasn't and I get the same error in the scanning software.

So i uninstalled and reinstalled and this time restarted after installing the software. Plugged it in again after restarting, same thing, doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Try uninstalling, then plugging in USB, when it says new HW found, then point it to the drivers...

#*$(#*$#()!!

This thing sucks it still doesn't work. I've tried nweaver's suggestion too. If I do that, it detects, says it's installing then nothing. I really doubt it actually installed because it still isn't detected in device manager or in the scanning software. I must have tried everything a million times it's so frustrating.

1. Is "Universal Serial Bus controllers" showing in your Device Manager?

2. Is scanner turned on and connected before you start computer (assuming s/w already installed)?

unplug it...un-install all the drivers...look for infs that refer to the scanner. Any reference in the registry. Restart...install the drivers...restart...when you get back to windows...plug the scanner in. It should find itself.
