I have win2k adv. server runnin on a 800mhz machine. The machine has 256 mg ram, 30 gb maxtor ata100 hard drive, on the MSI k7t Pro2-A mobo. The bios settings are default for PIO and DMA modes. In win2k adv. server, when I go to the devices and the look at the properties of my primary IDE channel it says: transfer mode - DMA if available, current transfer mode - PIO Mode. I cant get my hard drive to run in DMA mode. Anyone know why?

That is the only drive on that IDE channel, the CD-ROM is on the secondary IDE channel and that will go into DMA mode :)

There is a Win2kpro and Win2kServer pre-SP2 patch that is available. The patch enables ATA100 drives to work in UDMA mode. The only bug with this patch is, even though the drive will be working in UDMA mode, Device Manager will still say it's in PIO mode. Just ignore that.

the patch is available here:
Win2k ATA100 Patch
these are benchmark results (winbench) before and after the patch, you'll see the huge difference:
Benchmark Results

enjoy!

Hey man thanks a lot I'll check it out. This server is runnin real choppy compared to my machine that I use all the time. Of course mine is a 900@1000 tbird, with 256 high perf. RAM, as opposed to win2k adv. ser. on a 800 duron, with 256 generic memory. My mp3s will skip or scratch kinda, whatever you wanna call it, when I am opening programs on my server computer. When I am playing mp3s on my machine that i always use I can do anything and it wont do this to the mp3. I dont know what it is. If you have time compare my machines and tell me what you think it is.

Make sure UDMA5 is enabled on the hard drive. Check Maxtors site for the utility to change it.

Thanks for all the replies fellas Ill check in to all these things. Where on VIA's web page can I dl the 4.28 drivers? All I could find was the 4.25a drivers. Also is there any way to tell whether your HD is running in UDMA 5 mode? I couldn't find anything about it on maxtor's webpage. Does maxtor have a search function on their webpage?
