My daughter has an HD 4830 running on a 19" widescreen LCD 1440 x 900 native resolution. There is a few older games she still plays that use 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024.

Using Catalyst 8.12 she can't seem to set up these older games to run with a black border keeping the aspect ratio at default to avoid stretching and distorting the view.

Tried every combination with the driver options, but it still doesn't work, just stretches the image to fill the screen.

Anyone having the same problems and/or have a solution?

I will give it a try...My monitor supports 4:3 aspect ratio scaling so I have never needed this. Is it connected by the VGA cable or DVI?

I tried it out with my HD4830, and the GPU scaling seems to work fine. I selected "Use GPU Scaling" in CCC, and then selected "Use Centered Timings". Then I switched to 1024 x 768 resolution, and I get a perfect 1024 x 768 image centered in the screen (1:1 pixel scaling) with black bars all around. If I choose 1600 x 1200 resolution, then it fills up the whole height of my screen, with black bars on the sides. I haven't tried any games, but the scaling seems to work fine on the windows desktop. I'll try some old games next.

Edit: Games seem to work with centered timings OK - tested Return to Castle Wolfenstein. When set to 1024 x 768 I get a 1024 x 768 game screen, centered on the screen, with bars all around.

Edit Again: I tested with the "Maintain Aspect Ratio" setting and that also worked as expected. So I have to say that the GPU scaling is a complete success with my card and monitor. I'm using a Soyo 24" Topaz LCD, and a Sapphire HD4830, overcloked to HD4850 speeds. I'm using the DVI connector. Maybe it works for me as my monitor also natively supports 4:3 scaling. I', using catalyst drivers that I downloaded about 2 days ago.

I had trouble with this a couple of days ago (admittedly with an nVidia card) - the options I usually use to scale the image and keep the aspect ratio right (i.e. not stretch the picture) had vanished. Turned out the options are only available when you connect the monitor via DVI, not via analog VGA cable. Changed to DVI and up they popped. Haven't tried it on my ATI machine, but it could be a similar issue.

She's hooked up via DVI. She has a ViewSonic and when we hooked it up to my son's 8800GT, we got it to work. Maybe I'll try a different driver version?

I have the same problem.
My CCC version is 9.1 and my screen is connected through DVI.
The options kmmatney described doesn't exist for me. There is no "Use GPU Scaling" nor an "Use centered timings". I bought this computer to play warcraft 3 and now I can't because of my screen. I hate widescreens..

Her CCC looks exactly like that. When selecting the top option it still doesn't give black bars when using a lower resolution. She has a ViewSonic 19" widescreen native resolution 1440 x 900.

I'm going to hook up a different LCD and see if I can get black bars with that when enabling a lower resolution in the game options.
