Can't get gameport to work

I have an older PII 300 with onboard sound(soundpro with cmedia driver). Everything in device manager points to the fact that the joystick device is active but when I go into gaming options in the control panel, it wont connect the joystick. Even the little light on the joystick goes on. This is perplexing. I tried updating the drivers and no go. Does any body have some suggestions? I'd appreciate it.
