The front panel audio cable from case has 5 wires:
grd
grd
spkr L
spkr R
mic

from mobo manual:
Pin 1: Left mic input
Pin2: ground
3: Right mic input
4: not connected
5: Right Line out
6: Not connected
7: Front Mic detect
8: no pin
9: Left line out
10: Front line-out detect

So i plug:
pin1 = mic
pin2= grd
pin5= spkr R
pin9= Spkr L

I'm using headphones w/a mic. Sound comes out of the headphone, but i can't get the mic to work.

I tried plugging the mic into pin3,4,6,7, and 10. nothing.

the mic was working on my old system.

Any ideas?

One of the ground wires from the front panel is for the headphone or line out jack, the other is for the mic. Usually the front panel also has a wire for the mic bias current unless it is really old and expects you'll use only a dynamic or battery powered mic. which don't need a remote bias. Look at your mic plug. does it have two or three contacts (can be tip and shaft or tip, another ring and shaft? The extra ring is for the bias.

Do you have both GND wires from the front panel pluged in to Pin 2 on the mobo? Have you enabled the correct audio device on the mobo (I'm not sure if it's AC97, HD Audio or something else)? You might need to enable the front panel in the audio software.

how do u connect both grounds from front panel case to single ground on mobo?

my mic only has 2 rings. so i need one that had 3 rings? (it worked on my old nforce3-a/sempron 3100 setup.)

If your mic has only two contacts on the plug, then a two wire jack will be sufficient. You can connect your extra ground to any nearby ground pin - grounds are all the same.

Zepper is right, you need to ground the mic.

Your mobo header had only 1 ground for the front panel, so you used that 1 ground for the speakers. The mic also needs a ground , so find a ground pin anywhere (eg. unused USB header) and plug it in. If you don't have any nearby, then solder the two ground pins together and plug it into the header.

edit: OT whoa, haven't been on the forums in a while but just noticed Zepper no longer signs his posts with bh. Can't put your name to these words, zepper ?:p
