Can't get DSL because of fiber optic phone lines??

Sooo.. A friend of mine moved into an ancient apartment building in brooklyn (an area that was mostly wharehouses) and can't get a cable modem hook up... She recently spent the last 2 months trying to get DSL but they just told her that she can't get it because they have fiber optic phone lines and not copper ones.. What gives? Does she have any other options?

1. The CSR's is either spouting pure BS, or the reason is high HIGHLY simplified.

2. Wrong forum 😉

Sounds like pure BS to me...fiber optics are much better than copper wire...

Perhaps DSL is not available but with fiber optics to the apartment, if this is true, there are probably many other high speed internet options...

um, DSL does not run on fiber, and only copper, so the CSR was right.

so is there something else she can order? I remember having ISDN years ago - is there a cost effective (less than $80 a month) high speed option that runs on fiber?

ISDN runs over copper wire also. Besides it is slow and relatively expensive, although I have no idea about current costs for it. I know some of the places used to charge you EVERY time you connected with ISDN (maybe fractions of pennies, but it added up)

Since it is an apartment building I doubt a fixed wireless solution would be possible since they probably wouldn't let you put the antenna up, but if the owners dont care then it might work out.

what about cable? I've always assumed that it was availible everywhere in the NYC area.

going to be finding out if DSL is availible in my apartment next week when Verizon comes to hook up the phone. I'm hoping it is, but if not, we'll just be stuck with cable.
