Can't get core clock above 392 MHz

Best I can do is 392 MHz. Could it be that I just got a crappy card? Or do you think I should remove the old thermal interface material and put some AS5 on it? Or some other problem?

At least I got my mem clock up to 1190. :)

I would say you are at the max your card can do.. It could be a bios issue but all in all i think thats it for its stock voltage.

My 6800NU is stuck around 380. I removed the heatsink and ram sink. Looked like evga used a silver compond already on the GPU. Removed old stuff put AS5 on the GPU and the RAM(being very cafefull). Then i put my stock AMD64 fan on the GPU heatsink.

Well i still can't get higher overclocks. My temp max during 3dmark05 is around 63*C now. I think it used to be 72. But it seems it did not help.

I am thinking i might try to volt mod it in the bios seeing i am getting cooler temps now with the extra fan.

See normally I would agree with you Banshee, but it seems that everyone says that their 6800GT can "easily" do 400 (Ultra speeds). I've never really read about anyone having trouble with hitting 400, and not only that but the GS 6800GT is supposed to do 400 out of the box.

You'll find that all the people who's 6800's can't do 400 keep quiet and all those that can shout loudly ;) That said this is a golden sample - you pay more for a card which is meant to o/c well, it might even be guaranteed to reach ultra clocks? Check you warranty.

After doing a bit of searching it appears that the Gainward Golden Sample 6800GT IS guaranteed to reach 400/1100, but for some reason I can only get 392. I don't have the originaly warranty and stuff because I bought this card used.

Any ideas??

Maybe it was faulty in the first place and thats why the original seller dumped it. Or it might've been oc'ed to hell and now can only be stable at lower settings.
Since you don't have warranty, reseating the hs with as5 can't hurt.

You can still o/c the memory. If you're stuck with 390 instead of 400 on the core then it's not the end of the world, tbh you'd never notice the difference outside of a 3dmark test.

I know that I wouldn't notice a real-world difference from 392 to 400, but it would still be nice.. I'd like to get a 3dmark05 score in the high 5000's (current score 5412).

I was just wondering if maybe there was something I was overlooking that could be fixed easily. I'll try reseating the heatsink and applying AS5 soon, but anyone got anything else I could try until then??

I would say try a different cooler maybe - zalman or arctic slilencer? Not sure what the gainwards come with, but I replaced the stock cooler on my eVGA 6800gt as soon as I bought it with an nv silencer and can easily hit 400- and I did use AS5, which will always improve heat dissipation. What are your temps like?

My temps are ~57 C idle, and ~80 C under load. I was thinking of a different cooler, but wanted to be sure that was my problem first.

If MSI says it'll do 400 and it doesn't, RMA it. If they say it'll do 390 and it does 392, you got more than you paid for.

It's a Gainward card.. and it's supposed to do 400. But I bought it used, so can't RMA.

Caveat emptor. Talk to the dude you bought it from.

I second trying to replace the cooler (since you can't RMA it). I have an eVGA 6800GT with a Thermalright V-1 cooler and I was able to clock it to 420/1140 easily. Load temps never get above the mid 60's with just the stock fan that came with the V-1.

I have a 6800GT that only does 380, not much of a difference nor do I feel like changing the heatsink.. I leave it at stock speeds for stability purposes.
