Hey guys, here's the system I'm working with:

Windows XP Pro w/Sp1
Athlon 1000
ECS K7S5A
512mb RAM
Netgear FA310TX

All of a sudden, the connection to this computer stopped working. I rebooted it and when I check the IP info, it shows the IP as 169.254.96.28 with subnet mask as 255.255.0.0. When I try to release this information, the same info shows up. When I try to renew the IP, it says: The operation was attempted on something which is not a socket. My router is showing a network connection as is my network card, yet I can't renew the IP to get it to get online. The other computers connected to my router are fine, and I tried connecting this computer to another working network cable but the problem is the same. Help! Thanks in advance!

that 169.254.*.* is Windows Default IP assignment for when it cant find an IP through DHCP...what you might want to try is forcing it to a known IP...perhaps also try ping 127.0.0.1(loop back address) to see if the NIC is still alive and kicking.
