Can't get ATI Radeon Drivers installed

I have Vista Business x86 and have tried to install the Radeon drivers for my system. I downloaded the x86 vista drivers and ran the installation. There were no error messages reported in the process, and I rebooted as instructed. After the reboot, when I go to the display properties, and under settings, click advanced, it is still just the generic settings, not the Radeon specific settings. Also, when I look in the device manager, there is an exclamation point next to the entry for the Radeon 9500. If i get the details on it, it says that there has been a problem and has been disabled. I have tried updating the driver, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling all with the same result. Why can't I install the driver?

I'm not sure if the 9000 series is actually supported by that driver in question. I think it's only for X1K cards, or perhaps for those and the X series (X800 for example). Probably not for 9200, 9600, 9800 and such. I might be wrong though. But I'd be ready to bet that your problem is just that, no support for such a GPU series in that particular driver.

You should submit a ticket to the technical support at ATi.

Assuming he's talking about the newly released Catalyst 7.1 drivers for Vista, I'm running them with no issues on a 9700 Pro...

I don't really have any tips for the OP though since I didn't run into any issues getting mine installed.

I have a 9600 Pro and the drivers installed fine for me. Not sure why they aren't working for you.

They ran fine on my 9600SE... even the beta RTM drivers, the 7.1 were even better and yes, I just ran the executable (with admin right of course) and that was it.

yeah, i had no error messages, just says disabled due to an error in the device manager afterwards. The wierd thing is, I installed vista in a dual boot about a month and a half ago with the Vista RTM copy, and the drivers worked then...

I installed the Vista 7.1's on my 850XT without problem. I recall reading that the Vista 7.1's support back to 9500 cards. Maybe some old files not removed are wrecking the install or it might have something to do with the .NET Framwork needing to be installed for CCC.

Vista may be different, but You may have a corruption of NET Framework 2.0. I have had this happen many times in my XP installation. To solve the problem I just uninstalled NET Framework 2.0 via Add/Remove programs and then download and installed NET FRamework 2.0 from Microsoft.com. Did you do an Upgrade when you installed Vista? Your NET Framework 2.0 may have been corrupted and causing the non-installation issue. My ATI systems have failed driver installation many times due to this corruption.

If you just installed Vista reciently I would reformat and start over. Install the ATI drivers first thing.

i started my vista install with a reformat of the partition, so it doesn't seem like anything would be corrupt. i did install net framework, i could try re-installing that...
