Can't get ATI GTA3 Patch to install... (XP)

Okay, I'm butting my head against the wall here. I'm trying to get the new patch for GTA3 to install on my system. The installer runs, then craps out and says "The process cannot access the file becuase it is being used by another process" when it gets to installing the ATI3D2AG.DLL. And I cannot figure out which process is tying it up. I'm logged in as Admin, I've closed the virus scanner, MBM, the printer program, the ATI tool panel. The only applications running are ZoneAlarm. I closed every process that I can think of in Task Manager...

It's a Radeon 8500LE (retail) 128 meg. I have upgraded to Catalyst drivers, yes, thanks for asking... Soltek DRV4 motherboard. LCD panel.

Cripes, I even turned off font smoothing thinking that maybe that's tying it up.

Anyone else with the same problem?

Is this an official patch (made by Rockstar) to the game? Or is it a video adapter patch from ATI for the game?

It's from ATI to fix some Direct3D problems. They just posted it early this morning. Look for the link on rage3d.com or something.

Cannot get it to work...

I think I might have to just re-install the drivers and try again...

Yes, reinstalling everything would probably be a good idea.

just did the same update to my 8500dv. when you run the update, if you be more patient and actually read the "READ ME" section (first thing that pops up in installation), you'll see that ati has made a few suggestions describing what to do when the installation fails.

the same thing that happened to you also happened to me. all you need to do is to reboot the computer into safe mode, then run the update. everything should work like a charm.
