Hey all, I need some help. I have a Presario 5440 here that I was \ am trying to put a new HD in because the old one went bad. It may be something simple but and if anyone can point it out that's cool w\ me cause I have no idea how to get around what it's doing.lol
Here's the problem:
I hooked up the brand new HD on IDE 1 as the master. It had a cd and burner in it also hooked up on IDE 2 and of course a floppy. I also have a Win98se bootable cd & Win2k cd.
I go to install 98SE the first go around with the CD in the drive. When you power the computer on the light on the cd drive comes on but then it skips to reading the A drive and the light comes on their also, then it skips to the C drive(because that's how I have it set to read but of course nothings on the C drive) then the "Compaq" logo comes up in big red letters and just sits there. No commands on the screen ever saying that it found the floppy, RAM,CD drive or anything else.
I tryed a floppy 98 boot disk and the same thing happens, the disk is in the drive and the grn light comes on but it never reads it and just goes to the next selection which is C. I also tryed my Win2k cd and it wont read it either.
Now here's another twist for you... I can unhook the new HD and it will read the floppy or the cd and ask what I want to boot from ie HD or CD-rom, but that aint worth a sh*t because I dont have anything to install it to because the HD is not connected.lol
I have tryed putting the cd as the slave on Ide 1 and the HD as the master, I have tryed w\ the HD as master on 1 and the cd as master on ide2 as well as CS and that doesnt work either. So Im stumped. If anyone can recommend some things to try I would appreciate it greatly.lol
Oh 1 last thing, it does have a system restore disc but it wont read it either unless you unhook the HD.
