Can't get an IP Address... FIXED

Tab

System Configuration is as follows...

AMD 64 3000+
1GB RAM
X800XL
DFI Nforce4 Ultra-D
Windows XP SP 2 (Pretty close to the lastest updates)

My schools network had problems, and I orginally thought it was my computer. It seems while trying to fix it I screwed something up on my computer in the process.

When I load up in Gentoo Linux, I can get a IP Address from my Linksys WRT54G just fine, ala 192.168.1.2 . Windows XP will only give a me a werid 164.x.x.x address, which doesn't make sense to me at all. Shouldn't I get a 172.0.0.0 if I am not on a network? When I try to aquire an IP address it seems like my windows machine can only send packets and won't recieve any...

Anyway, I tried using my second ethernet port. That didn't work either, I uninstalled the drivers for that and disabled the interface in the bios. I uninstalled nvidia's drivers for my ethernet and reinstalled those and still get the same IP Address, a werid 164.x.x.x and I can't do anything with it.

Anyone have any suggestions, I'd really like to use my computer...without reformatting...

EDIT - Apparently I had reset my Mac Address and it was an invalid one... Never knew you could have an invaild mac address

164.whatever is what your computer says if it can't get any IP address at all. 127.0.0.1 (which is what I think you were suggesting) is your computer's internal IP, but it will never have that IP.

Just make sure it's on obtain IP address automatically. That's all I can think of.

FYI, MAC addresses that have on odd last byte (e.g.) 00:01:02:03:04:05 are multicast addresses and probably won't work (depending on hardware/software). Other hardware/software may have other restrictions, and your network may restrict access based on MAC address.
