Can't get 3000+ Venice over 2520mhz

I have been playing around with my 3000+ Venice and I just can't get past 2520mhz.

I tried with a 8x ratio and I can get 300HTT no problem. My ram is at 190mhz. It's not even stable at 2500mhz 1.5v.

Setup:
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
3000+ Venice
4 x 512 Corsair ValueSelect (2T, 2.5-3-3-8)
Antec Smartpower2 450watts

It IS perfectly stable at 2520mhz @ 1.55volts but that's pretty slow :( That's 9 x 280HTT.

HTT is at 3x, temps are below 50 degrees at full load.

It will boot at 2600 or 2700 no problem but fails Prime95 within a minute.

Do I have a bad overclocker or am I doing something wrong?

Most definately! I'll have mine this week and I'll be trying to push it to the limit also.

there are so many variables...whats your BIOS? whats your memory timings? (there are a lot beyond standard x-x-x-x on the Ultra D) whats your cooling?

Looke like you have a not-so-good overclocker to me if it runs 8x300htt, but not 9x300 (everything else the same except the CPU multi). Only thing to try is more voltage :)

Also, try it with one or two sticks of ram just in case. Typically most a64 cpus don't like 4xdimms, but it shouldn't limit your max cpu overclock (only memory speed).

I don't recommend more voltage. I've had 2 cpus go south after overclocking for about a year. If you plan to keep your system more than a year, I recommend you leave it at 2520.

The average Winchester doesn't go much above 2.5. More voltage likely won't solve the problem either. You see 20 or 30 people here who have got their Winchester to 2.6 or 2.8 GHz, but what you don't see are the hundreds of people who attempt to get there, but only make it to 2.4 or 2.5.

It's a venice not a Winchester.

I have the 6/23 BIOS and my timing are 2.5-3-3-8 but I'm running below 200mhz atm anyway.

I think the 8 x 300htt test eliminated any possibilities as Kogan said.

Have you tried to drop HTT to 2x ?

<600mhz HTT is fast enough for everything, it's still faster than 8xAGP.

2.5 GHz is good.

Not everyone gets more than that, especially with the newer Venices.

You are complaining about a 700+ MHz overclock? Geez, geeks are really finicky :p

I wouldn't go past 1.55. You are likely to gain very little (if any) but physical damage to the CPU is quite possible.

1.6 max with good aircooling/airflow. wouldnt go higher. (lcheck your temps)

Btw. 2520 is GOOD...what's your problem ? I think 2500ish is normal for venices.

I can get to 2700 (Prime95 stable) with my system:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor (Venice) @ 2.7 GHz, stock air; 1.55V
DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR
XFX GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express 128MB
Enermax EG565P-VE FMA 535W Power Supply
OCZ 2x512MB; Model #: OCZ400512WV3; 2.9V

Your BIOS is the latest. That is good. Have you upped your memory voltage (it helped me) and/or backed off your memory speed by using a divider (start with 1/2 and work your way up)? In short, take everything else out of consideration even if it means running it under specifications.

seems like only the early shipment of AMD 3000+ was able to do 2500Mhz+
AMD has been more and more strict on CPU now

I run at 1.5V so I dont think voltage will help much, try setting a memory divider or get better memory if possible. Your HTT is fine at 4X, as long as it stays around a GHz your fine which it will do, I dont know why someone suggested to downlock the HTT.

My Winchester 3000+ hits a brick wall at 2520 as well. We can't complain, it's a free 720MHz any way you slice it.

hahaha...my P4 2.6 hits the wall at 3.64.......

suppose its 1.04Ghz free of core speed

I do not complain about the free mhz. I'm just playing around to see if I can get better results. I DO use a memory divider (my memory is at 192 mhz at the moment).

I'm priming at 8 x 315 = 2520 too with a 3/5 memory divider = 210mhz. I'll see how far it goes with that setting.

I'm pretty much sure It's the max frequency of that cpu. Newer venices (as someone stated earlier) seems to hit the wall around 2500mhz. Which ain't bad but not as good as earlier weeks.
