Can't seem to get my DirecTV HR24 DVR to output 1080p to my Sony 55ex500 LCD. I've read that this particular DVR has trouble outputting 1080p to TVs that don't support 1080p/24 but my TV does. Also tried routing my video through my Sony Dh810 receiver bit that didnt work either. Any ideas?

most folks don't have 24p screens. I mostly got 1080i out of their buggy boxes. which is fine since that is the best broadcast seem to be but they need to step up to a nice profile h264 instead of mpeg4.

It's because the receiver only sends out a 1080p signal when there's a 1080p signal coming into the receiver which is currently only available via certain PPV content. As far as I'm aware there currently isn't anybody (satellite or cable) that transmits live content in 1080p.

That's what I'm noticing too. Just because it says HD next to the program doesn't mean its 1080p.

Wouldn't the box send a 1080P feed regardless of the content resolution (and just upscale it to 1080p)? Seems weird to output the feed to the TV at 720p/1080i, then make the box change resolution to 1080P only when needed (you wouldn't do that with computer/monitor setup, nor with other components such as my Boxee Box, which shows 1080P connection regardless of the content res). The strange thing is my earlier model DVR (HR21 or 22) connected to my Sony 32" LCD (720P only) shows the input as 1080P (obviously it can only display it in 720p).

The only 1080P content seems to be PPV/VOD movies at this point. I wish they had some free 1080P content to test this.

One thing to check is to make sure that you connect the TV and turn it on before you plug in the box or power it on. Boxes like this do the HDMI handshake at power on and have problems re-negotiating the connection if you plug in the cable after the device is already powered.

Normally the boxes send content at the highest rate the display can handle 24/7 even though the content itself may be lower. It is easier for the chipset in the boxes that way because each time the box itself switches display output format it has to do the handshake process all over again.

The HR24 and H24 have a setting that allows you to choose whether the box sends all signals at a specific resolution or at the native resolution of the broadcast. DirecTV has channels in 480i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p for some VOD. If you have a 1080p television, you can tell it to send all resolutions to the tv at 1080p, using the box to upres anything less than 1080p. You can also set the box to send the signal in its native resolution and let the tv take care of the up or down sampling. Sounds like you have it set to native. The setting is in the "Menu" and (I think) "Setup & Fav's". Check your manual or head over to www.satelliteguys.us. This is pre-school stuff for those guys.

Most TVs don't up and downsample as well as most DVD players, BR Players and receiver boxes, so most people are better suited to setting the output on the receiver. If you have a high quality TV, though, it may do it better than the box. Only your eyes can make that decision.

the dtv box sucks at sampling. you want your tv to do it trust me. i just had issues getting it to accept 1080p - it wouldn't and my old dish box did 1080p as did everything else. the HR24 is a big turd imo.

I do have Native set to off already.
