Can't format MMC

My MMC addition to my RCA Lyra player stopped working a few days ago, as in the MP3 player wouldn't read it anymore. I've tried turning it off, taking out the batteries, taking out the MMC and putting it back in..but it still wouldn't work.

I then tried connecting it to my computer through the USB cable, and tried formatting..but alas the format wouldn't work either.

What could it be?
