Can't Format in XP

I searched for this one because I thought I read it not to long ago, but couldn't find it.

I just received my refurbed replacement from WD for a bad drive and cannot format from xp. It says that this device is in use or close any windows that show the drives contents. I used to be able to do this without a hitch.

I'm running XP Home SP1 with all the hot updates. The drive formatted ok from the WD utilities diskette, but I want to make sure that the drive is ok so I want to do a full format. I know I can boot from the XP CD and do this but I was able to format form within the OS before.

Any suggestions?

Use the command prompt in your OS.

Start > Run > type "cmd" > click okay > type "format X:"
