Can't format Drive in Win8.1?

Homerboy

I have a 3TB Seagate that is recognized and formats just fine in my Win7 machine. I pulled it out and put into a Win8.1 machine and I can't do anything with it.

This is how disk manager sees it:

It was ONE parition when I pulled it out of the Win7 machine.
As you can see too, I can't re-partition or format or anything.

Help?

2 different machines.. 2 different bios(s)..

Thats fine... though I guess I dont see how that's a problem -- I've shuffled disks between machines 100s of times.

That being said, I want to move this 3TB disk to the win8.1 machine and I can not get it formatted. That's what I need to know

You'll need to partition/format as GPT, and unless your computer has UEFI bios, you can not boot to a 3Tb drive..

format it in the win7 machine to GPT you mean? then plug it into the win8 machine?

Yeah I won't be booting. This is just another drive to add to the Drive Pool

With a 3Tb drive, The bios is what's important here.. What motherboard is it plugging into?

That chipset is too old to recognize the full 3Tb of the drive. You can use it as a secondary drive, but you will need to use a GPT partition instead of MBR.

What machine/board is it going into?

I formatted GPT in the windows 7 machine.
plugged into Win8 machine
rebooted and all 3TB are there.
added to Storage Space and I'm set.

Thanks for the direction/hints. Reading back on my posts, sorry if I sounded short with my comments. I'm overtired and trying to juggle 3 things at once. Frustration got the best of me.

Thanks again!
