So I have 4 hd's.

2 on IDE1, and other 2 on IDE3, which is apart of my Soyo Board. Its the onboard raid, but I am not utilizing that aspect. I am running just normal IDE.

Ok, heres my prob

I have 2 drives on the raid ide as normal
1 120gb maxtor
1 13gb fujitsu

About a month ago I compressed the "I" drive, the 13gb one, and some files were compressed, some werent.
Now I just realized that I cannot cut and paste files from it over to other drives. I get an "IO Error". It will not work.

The compressed files, shown in blue, do not move. It seems like they are the main culprit.

So I should reformat right? Ya I tried that.

First I tried it in Disc Management, control panel..etc.
Went here, selected I: Format, etc. Gets about 80 or so percent in, and then I get an error message saying it cant be formatted. I look at it, it shows it as having 12.72 gb free, so it seems empty. I go into My Computer, look at the drive, nothings inside, but then I just click the icon once, so that it selects it, and shows the stats on the left, know what i mean. At this part it shows nothing.

I cant copy and paste anything into it either. Its messed up.

So I reboot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
I then copy over all the noncompressed files from the I to the F(my 120gb). That works fine. I did this because I was planning on formatting thinking it would work for sure.

Anyways, I select all the options, and it gets to about the same place, and does not work. Stops. I type "I:", and I get nothing. Doesnt recognize it.

So at this point Im pretty pissed off.
I get back into Windows.
Go back to Disk Management, and deleted the partition. Nothing worked there, after I tried to add it back in again, as a new one, and had to format it, but it would not work again.

I uninstailled the device from my system.

Why can I not format this drive. When I go to decompress the files. I get the IO error for each. I am stuck on what to do. Please help.

Ok so theres nothing on the drive?

Save yourself time, and save everyone else time.

Boot from a DOS disk or Win98 cd something that contains fdisk.

Fdisk the hard drive, completely erase the partition, just get rid of it.

Then create a new partition, go back to dos, restart, back to dos, and format the drive again.

Hey presto you have a new partitioned empty drive.

Saying this, if the drive is still in NTFS format (Which i guess it must be seeing as you have compressed the files on the drive), then you shouldnt actually be able to even see the drive in DOS at all. In this senario you would need a windows NT / 2k / XP setup to format the drive for you, or aquire yourself a partition magic boot disk or other disk management software boot disk, that allows you to format (other than FAT32) partitions, i.e NTFS from DOS.

The reason you might of been having difficulty formatting in windows is more than likely due to the fact windows was probably accessing something from the Hard Drive which was obviously "In use" in the eyes of Windows, in turn, due to the fact Windows is a stroppy OS, means you cannot delete something that is in use by windows.

Hope this helps a little.
If not then bah, im off to work in half an hour anyhows.

Nope. They're on the RAID IDE as normal - they're not in a RAID setup; he's just using the RAID IDE controller as a normal IDE controller.

Something else to try on a DOS boot disk - ZAP, a utility from IBM's website. Just be sure to use it on the correct drive; with the RAID IDE controller in there too, it might just be a good idea to unhook all drives except the one you want wiped.
Hopefully, once the drive is ZAPped, you can partition and format it with Disk Management (that works on unpartitioned drives right?).
Oh yeah, go to Bootdisk.com to get a Win98SE boot disk image.

Lets see. how did I fix this.

Oh ya, I had an old PCI Promise ATA/100 Controlller laying around, that I actually used before this, with 2 Hd's on it.
Then I got my 120 gb, and ditched my 6.4 gb, kept my Fujitsu 13gb. I ran them both on IDE3, just to be "Clean" I guess, and not have to use that PCI card.

Well I guess that was my problem, it didnt like the Fujitsu. Plus in bios, the Promise card loads like 10 times faster. So I got into Windows basically, double clicked it, it said I had to format, I chose NTFS, quick format, and all is well.

It is now my PageFile drive. :).

Everything is so quick, and I am happy.

Thanks guys
